NR Foundation initiates project “PREREPANA” phase ll in association with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement
A way forward towards a new development paradigm in the slums of Mysuru city
Mysuru, 19th April, 2016: NR Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the NR group, makers of Cycle Pure Agarbathies, enters into the next phase of ‘Project Prerepana (Phase II) to promote sustainable development of seven slums in Mysuru through its focus on health, education, and socio-economic empowerment of youth and women. NR Foundation had earlier supported the Phase 1 of this project which lasted 5 years i.e. 2006 to 2011.
With an aim to generate awareness on issues crucial for development, establish learning centers, provide career guidance and counselling, and strengthen community-based institutions, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), the implementing partner had successfully executed Prerepana phase–I (2006). This had focused on women and child welfare with its thrust on health and education.
Following the phase I success, proposed for 5 years (2016-21), and to sustain community driven progress, Phase II Prerepana aims to address and resolve the critical needs of the slum dwellers and strengthening the key social development indicators like issues of health (Alcohol De-addiction), education (Children & Youth) and facilitating linkages for social entitlements in the community. The project will lay its focus on seven slums of Mysuru viz Karakushalanagar, Metagalli Ekalavyanagara, Bharath Nagar, Kalyangiri–KSB Colony, Vande Matharam, Shivrathreshwara nagara and Kesare- Kurimandi.
The second phase of the project focuses on four main objectives.
. Organizing the community people under common affinity groups/ SHG’s & formation of committees for facilitating activities of Prerepana.
. Undertaking participatory community programs focusing on children, women and youth in the field of physical, intellectual & emotional capabilities.
. Facilitating securing social entitlements for eligible individuals.
. Mobilizing the social capital which will lead to sustainability of the program
Guru, chairman of N.R. Group says, “Our primary goal for Prerepana Phase II is the development of intellectual, human and social capital in Mysuru. The contribution of the slum dwellers to the city’s economy is substantial. As the industrial workers, construction laborers, domestic servants, and a whole range of petty traders together render a lot to the city’s development. One way to alleviate the misery of slum dwellers from downtrodden existence and lead them towards sustainable development is through education, skill development, and health while also enhancing capacity and improve market access for youth and women for employment generation, he added.
Some of the milestones that this project aims to incorporate to reach this goal of development of human capital are as follows:
. Increase in enrollment to school & colleges
. Educating 100% of the population of 7 slums in Mysuru city about the ill-effects of alcoholism and Substance abuse on the individual, the family and the society at large
. Identification of Vocational training institutions & two Vocational training programmes per year (Computer basic skill & Beautician, candle making etc)
. Creating awareness about social benefits schemes
Dr R Balasurbramaniam, Founder & President of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) remarks, “We are looking at a holistic community development as a partnership between corporates, community and development agencies. Worked with disadvantaged populations, in interior difficult areas for more than three decades; the expertise in the area of health and education interventions (formal, non-formal education, mainstreaming children into regular schools), working with communities, CBOs, PRIs and Government; having a successful development intervention plan to serve as a model, we have vast experience in serving the underprivileged communities. This project will lead to the successful development and transformation of the underprivileged community with a community led movement while also strengthening the community bonding. The local committees will have network with local institutions and will be able to show leadership to catalyze, absorb and manage the process of change as well as depict the changed society.”
